Abstract in English
This project is based upon two books of woodcut printed images along with two independent essays, which composes a third volume containing conceptual and aesthetic references, as well as explanations about the process of constructing each of the visual narratives presented in the picture books. In common, in addition to the use of woodcut key-blocks for printing, the two narratives address the theme of the passage of time. In the essay that addresses the first book of images, entitled of the clouds, departing from the exercise of contemplation of the movement of clouds in the sky, reflections are presented on the creation of books using woodcut image as a means of printing and expression, addressing in an anachronist way and through the development of a structure constellation some examples of the West as the Book of Revelation, created by Albrecht Dürer, jumping into the Eastern publications developed in Edo period Japan. Image books (ehon) were produced for various purposes and have contributed to form the aesthetics of the genre called ukiyo-e (paintings of the floating world). However, it is not possible to raise reflections on books and image sequences without addressing artistic productions that have narrativity characteristics as the backbone of their poetic creation, and because of this we looked at works produced by various artists such as the Dutch Frans Masereel, the Americans Andy Warhol and Edward Rucha, in addition to the woodcut prints signed by Brazilian Luise Weiss. The discussion about the graphic representation of clouds is part of this text considering the thoughts about the presence of yohaku (empty space) in the pictorial compositions of the East and how this relationship with the white of the clouds are also present in the works of Western artists such as the English painter William Turner. Besides observing the intellectual construction of the massive drawnings in the Project for the Construction of a Sky of São Paulo based artist Carmela Gross. The references to Gross work are followed by paragraphs that deal with the use of shades of blue for the making of our image books and for the conception of books key-blocks. The second essay that composes this project, logically referring to or another book of images of the rivers, begins with the fragment written by the Pre-Socratic philosopher Heraclitus of Efesus, in which is presented the idea of impermanence through the metaphor of a river that flows: In fact, it is not possible to enter twice in the same river. Impermanence is a common theme in the East artistic production. Especially after the introduction of Buddhism in Japan, several visual and literary works have dealt with the theme. It is therefore essential to turn our eyes to the of these people production, especially if we are interested in books composed of woodcut print images. It is from the books and series of prints of the ukiyo-e genre that we have seeked the aesthetic references to create the figures presented in the compositions of the books of the rivers. There are figures of animal and vegetal species that, in our books, are lost from the construction of instrumentalized narratives by the Intersemiotic Translation process proposed by Julio Plaza. Plaza's ideas are the references that have lead us to the ideogrami-like operation compositions much in the style of Serguei Eisenstein film montages and in the search to developing the potentiality of reproducible and repeatable images, this time guided by the poetics of Evandro Carlos Jardim. Thus, the multiple relationships that images establish with the narrative are unrevealed and, beyond the books, with the passage of time and the ways we deal when we come in contact with these sort of works that intend to tell stories through plural narratives.
