Abstract in English
The research investigates the pianist's work in at least two dimensions: the first is related to the artistic and creative elaborations of instrumentalists who deal, primarily, with concert music; the second approaches the occupational insertion of pianists in society. Its objective is to find out in which ways pianists experience their profession, both in the spheres of musical activity and of employment, with their specific demands and practical needs, such as to make a livelihood. Data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews (QUEIROZ, 1991) with eighteen musicians who live and work in the city of São Paulo and its metropolitan area. This study has profited of the researches of Antunes (2009), Huws (2017, 2019) and Dubar (2020) for understanding the morphology of labor in contemporaneity, as well as the research of Becker (2008), Menger (2005) and Segnini (2006), that specifically problematize the theme of working in the arts. The thesis is structured in three chapters, covering various aspects of the pianists' personal and professional trajectory, from the beginning of instrument learning to the challenges encountered in everyday life. The first chapter discusses the musicians pianistic initiation, family support and the first acquisition of skills; the second seeks to understand what are the main triggers for professionalization; the third investigates how the interviewees deal with the demands due to their professional life from the point of view of their relationship with the instrument. The results reflect the intense movements in the interviewee's professional life as they continue to search for a delicate balance between, on the one hand, autonomy at work, in its various dimensions, and, on the other hand, the search for financial security.
