Title in Portuguese
Imagens e música: estudo conceitual e invenções musicais

Música experimental

Abstract in English
The term image has multiple meanings: besides its usual association to what is visible, it is also used to designate metaphors, apparitions, mental projections, representations, icons, dreams, musical figures, among many other things. This research seeks to understand what the image is and how it interacts with musical creation. The investigation took two parallel and complementary paths: on one hand, through a philosophical study focused on Henri Bergson's concept of image, and Gilbert Simondon's inventive cycle of images - revisited by Gilles Deleuze and whose crossings with artistic creation are found in Anne Sauvagnargues. On the other side, through the realization of collaborative, experimental and intermedia creative processes in which mental, visual, sound and tactile images are explored as operators of musical creation. In a cycle of feedback between theory and practice, the methodology of this work is situated in artistic research, while the questions that emerge from the creative processes are the ones that guide the theoretical study and further musical experimentations. In the first layer of the thesis, there is a critical reading of the philosophical concepts studied; in the second, the reports and analysis of six creative processes carried out between 2020 and 2021.
