Abstract in English
The theme of this dissertation is related to a specific field of studies from traditional concert music called collaborative piano. During the process of reading the reports of the working pianists (LINDO, 1916; MOORE, 1956, 1963; SPILLMAN, 1985; KATZ, 2009), I noticed the existence of complaints about prejudices and stereotypes linked to this profession. These perceptions proved to be recurrent despite the different historical and geographical contexts of the authors. After listing the narratives of these pianists, I identified that the complaints are located in three distinct social fields: pedagogical, artistic and mediatic. To avoid a direct application of issues possibly related to foreign contexts, I chose to research the social representations given to the collaborative pianists in my context: São Paulo. To this end, I articulate the narratives in the specialized literature and in the musical reviews published in the newspaper O Estado de São Paulo. Thus, this work aims to a) to comprehend the different forms of treatment granted to the collaborative pianists; b) to examine which stereotypes and imagery are used; and c) to understand possible relationships between the narratives, the structure of music teaching and the media treatment. An exploratory research was carried out in the online collection of Estadão, in which 239 musical reviews (1919-2012) were listed and transcribed. The quantitative and qualitative analysis of these documents were informed by Serge Moscovici's theory of social representations (2003). Through them, I found that the treatment fiven to the collaborative pianists were related to the instrumentation of the presentation. In vocal and instrumental duos, there is a disproportionate difference between the treatment given by critics to the soloists and the pianists, the latter being the musicians over whom the critics recurrently avoid talking about. In turn, in the trios and major formations, the critics talk more about the performance of the group instead of individuals. In turn, the maintenance of structures and treatments in the educational and mediatic field were approached from Bourdieu's concept of habitus (1987, 1996, 2011). These analysis demonstrated that the questions can, in part, be understood in the interrelation between the structures of: a) the pedagogical field, heir to a teaching model focused on soloist performance and a conservatory habitus; b) the artistic field, in which the individuals, prepared by the institutions for the performance of solo repertoire, clash over the dynamics of music performance, falling into a supportive role for the others musicians; and c) the media field, in which music critics, based on previously constructed socio-musical representations, do not approach sufficiently the collaborative pianists and, when they do, frequently reinforce historically constructed stereotypes.
