Abstract in English
This research seeks to reflect on the aesthetics of the instrumental music for viola in Brazil in the recent decades, mapping some elements that were incorporated contemporaneously in this musical universe and that point to an accentuated process of modernization of this instrument. Brought to Brazil nearly five centuries ago, the ten-string guitar became an instrument widely spread throughout the country. However, despite the great diversity of its uses and its presence in numerous cultural events throughout the country, the instrument has often been seen as a regional symbol fundamentally linked to caipira culture and is rarely addressed in academic research. Through an aesthetic-musical analysis of the works of four contemporary viola players - Tavinho Moura, Heraldo do Monte, Almir Sater and Ivan Vilela - this work presents some technical and musical creation paths linked to the practice of ten-string guitar in Brazil, establishing some relationships between these contemporary works and the compositional material historically used in the repertoire for instrumental viola. Even though these viola players have very different musical universes, the research seeks to draw parallels between their pieces, relating them through the viola and establishing links between these particular universes and the paths traced by the ten-string guitar itself throughout history. We therefore propose, through this analysis, a review of the perspective that imposes on the viola the belonging to an essentially rural instance, aiming to highlight reflections that underline, in contemporaneity, the fundamental hybridisms to the instrument's new sounds.
