Esta dissertação tem o objetivo de trazer explicações coerentes em relação à harmonia e forma de músicas da discografia do grupo Os Mutantes (1968-1972) por meio da teoria de música pop/rock difundida nos últimos trinta anos em países como Estados Unidos, Canadá e Inglaterra. A análise formal será feita de acordo com conceitos apresentados por William Caplin (1998, p. 17) de funções inter e intratemáticas [inter and intrathematic functions] e adaptadas para o Rock por Walter Everett. A análise harmônica será feita segundo critérios sintáticos, ou seja, a abordagem na qual os acordes projetam determinada função de acordo com a sua posição na forma da música (NOBILE, 2016, passim). Estudos de harmonia em Rock iniciados por Christopher Doll, Mark Spicer e Drew Nobile também serão considerados neste estudo. Embora tivesse como objetivo a música tonal, a análise Schenkeriana foi adaptada ao Rock e também foi considerada nesta pesquisa. O grupo foi escolhido como a banda representante do Rock produzido no Brasil devido ao seu caminho histórico: nos anos 1950, o Rock no Brasil era baseado em sua maioria por versões de músicas inglesas e americanas e permanece com esta característica predominante até a jovem guarda. Os Mutantes, por sua vez, marcaram presença no início do Rock escrito por brasileiros (composições originais). Ademais, a importância de seus membros e sua contribuição para o tropicalismo e o Rock no Brasil são fatores que contribuíram fortemente para a escolha do grupo para este estudo.

This dissertation aims to bring coherent explanations in relation to the harmony and morphology of songs by the group Os Mutantes through the theory of pop/rock music spread over the last thirty years in countries such as the United States, Canada and England. Formal analyses were done according to formal concepts by William Caplin (1998, p. 17) of inter- and intra-thematic functions and adapted to the Rock genre by Walter Everett. Harmonic analyses were done according to the syntactic criteria, that is, it is the approach in which chords project a certain function according to their position in the songs formal structure (NOBILE, 2016, passim). Rock harmony studies initiated by Christopher Doll, Mark Spicer and Drew Nobile were also considered in this study. Even though tonal music is included as a goal, the Schenkerian analysis was adapted to Rock and will also be considered in this research. The group Os Mutantes was chosen as a representative Brazilian Rock band due to its historical path: in the 1950's, Rock in Brazil was based mostly on versions of English and American songs and remained with this predominant characteristic until the Jovem Guarda movement. Os Mutantes, in turn, were present at the beginning of Rock written by Brazilians (original compositions). Furthermore, the importance of its members and their contribution to Tropicalism and Rock in Brazil are factors that strongly contributed to the choice of the group for this study.
