Abstract in English
The research rests around the question: what is the essay? It takes as a starting point Michel de Montaigne's writings, which were named Essays, being the first to shift the meaning of an ancient word to some of the meanings we have today. In order to illuminate this study, an idea by Michel Foucault for the essay is used as a provisional definition: self-modifying experience in the game of truth. Through this clipping, the essay reading is directed by two focuses: the problem of truth and lies to the author and the relationship established by Montaigne between his life and his work. In the second part, with some meanings for the word essay, we try a shift towards to the notions of practices of the self and spiritual exercises of philosophy in antiquity: dealt by Michel Foucault and Pierre Hadot. In this shift, we discuss approximations and departures between some of the logic of the essay and techné tou biou (art of living). From this discussion comes the question: If modern philosophy has departed from the logic of exercise of the self, was the path in art the opposite? Modern and contemporary art incorporated exercises and practices of the self? From the question we go to Orson Welles, dealing with two of the director's projects in which the relationship between reality and fiction appeared as a problem: It's all true (unfinished project) and F for fake (1973). The ways in which the director treats his objects amplifies our gaze to the essay. In the latter parts, I dwell and write about some of my experiences in the Ignorant Essays project, understanding the essay also as a place to learn (and teach) what (still) is ignored on the scene, in class, in life.
