The 1978 Brazilian Opinion Fair
Abstract in English
This paper will initially analyze the political and social function of the event called Brazilian Opinion Fair, which was prevented from being staged by censorship. The ten dramaturgical texts, written between 1977 and 1978 especially for the event, did not got into scene, but were published by the Teatro Urgente (Urgent Theater) collection in the same year, organized by Ruth Escobar. Then, starting from two chosen texts - O Quintal, by João das Neves and Sobrevividos, by Leilah Assumpção - we will trace a look comparing the period that ends with the Military Coup of 1964 and the period of re-democratization of the country. The two pieces portray, in different ways, questions such as: What is the social function of art?; What is popular culture?; Who are our people? We will discuss, from the exemplary forms brought by the pieces, the way which the artists of the period experienced the limits between engagement and co-optation, between resistance to the restriction of freedom and survival in face of a flourishing cultural industry.
