Esta pesquisa examina os trajes de cena do teatro popular e seus entrelaçamentos com a cultura onde se desenvolve. A partir dos estudos históricos sobre o teatro, analisamos a trajetória de diferentes iniciativas populares com o objetivo de representar visualmente o teatro popular por meio dos trajes utilizados. Compreendemos o traje de cena do ator popular como uma construção baseada nas condições culturais que cercam esse ator. Desta forma, observamos o percurso do ator e brincante paraibano, José Maciel, e as relações do mesmo com os trajes de folguedo e das artes cênicas, por meio da história oral e análise documental dos espetáculos que participou. O traje de cena do teatro popular identificado neste estudo, auxilia a compreensão do figurino teatral enquanto elemento cênico permeado por aspectos sociais, políticos e estéticos.

This research investigates the costumes of popular theater and its relation with the surrounding culture. According to historical studies on theater, we analyze the course of different popular expressions aiming to represent visually the popular theater through the costumes. We understand the costume of popular actor as a construction based on the cultural conditions that surrounds it. Thus, we observe the path of José Maciel, actor from Paraíba, and his relations with folk and performing arts, through oral history and documentary analysis of the plays he has taken part. The costume of popular theater identified in this study helps to understand the costume as a scenic element sewed by social, political and aesthetic aspects.
