Title in Portuguese
D. Pedro (II) e o teatro no Brasil: 1840-1871

Teatro brasileiro

Abstract in English
This dissertation approaches the relationship of D. Pedro II with the theater developed in Brazil during the first 30 years of his reign. The main objective is to give visibility to the relationship between this monarch and the theater practiced in the country at his time, understanding if his performance had any direct influence on the development of the performing arts in Brazil throughout the 19th century. Having as references the diaries of the emperor, 19th century newspapers and consecrated and contemporany studies, such as those of Fraguas (2019), Faria, (1993 e 2001), Medeiros (2010) e Silva (2017), on D. Pedro II, Brazil Empire and Brazilian Theater, the study investigates the second Brazilian emperor in the public and private areas, seeking to investigate him as a participant agent of the theatrical scene developed in Brazil during the studied period. From the analyzed material it was possible to identify the involvement of D. Pedro II with the theater practiced in the country as a spectator, patron, amateur critic, translator and ally of great names on the 19th century national scene. His involvement with theatrical art was greater than the established historiography usually defends and was not characterized as a resource for the construction of a determined image of the emperor.
