Entre as infraestruturas técnicas disponíveis para a bibliometria avaliativa estão as bases de dados científicas e os buscadores acadêmicos. O Google Scholar (GS) é um mecanismo que tem despertado interesse da comunidade científica devido à sua capacidade de rastreamento de citações e de geração de métricas, provocando reflexões acerca de seus potenciais e limites no desenvolvimento de análises que permeiam os critérios de avaliação de políticas científicas e de desempenho. Objetivo: Realizar a análise e o mapeamento em publicações da comunidade de Bibliometria e Cientometria sobre o uso do Google Scholar (GS) para fins avaliativos. Metodologia: Primeiramente foi feita uma revisão bibliográfica para a fundamentação teórica. Posteriormente, com as publicações recuperadas da base de dados Web of Science (WoS), foram feitas duas abordagens sendo: 1) quantitativa, na qual, por meio da análise bibliométrica, foi possível mensurar os dados e usá-los como critérios de inclusão e exclusão e; b) qualitativa, utilizando a Revisão Sistemática da Literatura (RSL), a partir de um conjunto de critérios específicos. A seleção de publicações da amostra se deu a partir dos autores mais prolíficos de cada país, incluindo suas redes de coautorias. Resultados: Foram selecionadas 81 publicações, sendo os artigos de estudos empíricos classificados em 18 categorias de uso do GS, enquanto os artigos de revisão foram analisados segundo os tópicos abordados nos mesmos. Verificouse que os autores da Espanha são os que mais se destacam, tanto em relação ao número de artigos publicados quanto à diversificação de categorias de uso do GS. De modo geral, os autores que utilizaram o GS publicam em colaboração com outros autores, de diferentes instituições ou países, unindo esforços. O buscador apresenta significativa procura, dado o seu potencial de oferecer citações a documentos que usualmente não são indexados nas bases de dados tradicionais, além das ferramentas associadas que permitem obter indicadores de citação. Conclusões: O tamanho e a cobertura de diversos tipos documentais tornam o GS uma fonte importante da literatura científica, propiciando acesso à produção científica de diferentes países e idiomas. Porém, o GS ainda precisa ser considerado com cautela, para fins avaliativos, por apresentar problemas e limites que devem ser observados criteriosamente e, nesse sentido, a comunidade especialista tem oferecido importantes contribuições.

Among the technical infrastructures available for evaluative bibliometrics are scientific databases and academic search engines. Google Scholar (GS) is a mechanism that has aroused the interest of the scientific community due to its potential for tracking citations and generating metrics, attracting reflections about its potential and limits in the development of analyzes that permeate scientific policies criteria and evaluation performance. Objective: To carry out the analysis and mapping in publications of the Bibliometrics and Scientometrics community, on the Google Scholar (GS) use for evaluative purposes. Methodology: First of all, a bibliographic review was carried out for the theoretical foundation. Subsequently, with the publications retrieved from the Web of Science (WoS), two approaches were made: 1) quantitative, in which, through bibliometric analysis, it was possible to measure the data and use them as inclusion and exclusion criteria, and; b) qualitative, using the Systematic Literature Review (RSL) based on a set of specific criteria. The selection of publications in this sample was based on the most prolific authors in each country, including their co-authorship networks. Results: There were 81 publications, being selected from studies in articles classified in 18 categories of GS use, while the review articles were informed according to the topic comments in them. It was found that authors from Spain are the ones that stand out the most, both in terms of the number of articles published and the diversification of GS categories. In general, authors who use the GS publish in collaboration with other authors from different institutions or countries, joining efforts. The search engine has significant demand, given its potential to offer citations to documents that are not usually indexed in traditional databases, besides the associated tools that allow obtaining citation indicators. Conclusions: The size and coverage of different types of documents make the GS an important source of scientific literature, providing access to scientific production from different countries and languages. However, the GS still needs to be considered with caution, for evaluative purposes, as it presents problems and limits that must be carefully observed and, in this sense, the specialist community has offered important contributions.
