Keywords in Portuguese
Àgua ozonizada
Cirurgia oral
Infecção focal dentária
Ozônio
Title in English
Ozone therapy as an auxiliary method in the treatment of dental abscesses
Keywords in English
Focal dental infection
Oral surgery
Ozonated water
Ozone
Abstract in English
Ozone therapy presents itself as a promising complementary treatment adjunct to surgical protocols and antibiotic support in serious hospital infections. Proof of this bactericidal effect of ozonated water in human studies is of paramount importance in the treatment of complex maxillofacial infections, given that the number of strains resistant to the most varied types of antibiotics is increasing. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the possible adjuvant topical effect of ozone therapy together with the use of antibiotics and conventional surgical therapy. A comparative evaluation was carried out in patients with odontogenic infections at the Osasco Regional Hospital, São Paulo Health System (SUS/SP), where two groups received conventional treatment (drainage + removal of the dental focus when possible) and appropriate antibiotic therapy for the infection; and the control group (SF) received irrigation with 0.9% saline solution and the test group (OZ) received adjuvant treatment with ozonated water. For this, the following parameters were evaluated: pre- and post-treatment laboratory tests (C-reactive protein and leukocytes), clinical improvement and length of hospital stay. After statistical analysis, it was observed that the OZ and SF groups were very similar in relation to the reduction of the two parameters evaluated.
