Diante do crescente uso da Tomografia Computadorizada de Feixe Cônico (TCFC) na Odontologia atual e seus benefícios, a busca a fim de eliminar exames radiográficos adicionais desnecessários para avaliação da maturação esquelética foi um estímulo para a execução deste estudo, que teve como objetivo avaliar a aplicabilidade clínica de exames de TCFC na maturação óssea das vértebras cervicais de crianças e adolescentes, e verificar a correlação com a idade cronológica e sexo. A casuística foi composta por 100 exames de TCFC de indivíduos de ambos os sexos (49 do sexo feminino e 51 do sexo masculino) e com idades entre 6 a 17 anos. Dos exames de TCFC foram selecionadas reformatações sagitais que foram avaliadas por um examinador devidamente treinado e calibrado que classificou por indicadores de maturação óssea das vértebras cervicais (IMVC) todos os exames, de acordo com o método de maturação óssea das vértebras cervicais proposto por Hassel e Farman (1995), compreendendo as vértebras C2, C3 e C4. A análise de reprodutibilidade dos IMVC nas reconstruções sagitais foi avaliada pela estatística Kappa e o teste de Spearman foi aplicado para verificar relação entre os IMVC e a idade cronológica e os sexos. Os resultados indicaram que houve uma taxa de reprodutibilidade da avaliação da maturação óssea das vértebras cervicais em TCFC quase perfeita com estimativa de acerto de 87,1%; forte correlação entre os IMVC e a idade cronológica (r=0,794) e entre os IMVC e ambos os sexos (r=0,795 para o sexo feminino e r=0,872 para o sexo masculino), para todos p0,05. Os resultados deste estudo sugeriram que os exames de TCFC podem ser úteis para estimativas de maturação esquelética na prática clínica, embora não devam ser utilizados apenas para esse fim.

In view of the increasing use of Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) in current Dentistry and its benefits, the search to eliminate unnecessary additional radiographic exams to assess skeletal maturation was a stimulus for the execution of this study, which aimed to evaluate the clinical applicability of CBCT exams in bone maturation of the cervical vertebrae of children and adolescents, and to verify the correlation with chronological age and gender. The sample consisted of 100 CBCT exams from individuals of both genders (49 females and 51 males) and aged 6 to 17 years. From the CBCT exams, sagittal sections were selected and evaluated by a properly trained and calibrated examiner who classified all exams by cervical vertebrae maturation index (CVMI), according to the cervical vertebrae bone maturation method proposed by Hassel and Farman (1995), including the C2, C3 and C4 vertebrae. The reproducibility analysis of the CVMI in sagittal reconstructions was evaluated by the Kappa statistic and the Spearman test was applied to verify the relationship between the CVMI and the chronological age and the genders. The results indicated that there was a reproducibility rate in the evaluation of bone maturation of the cervical vertebrae in CBCT almost perfect, with an estimate of accuracy of 87.1%; strong correlation between CVMI and chronological age (r = 0.794) and between CVMI and both genders (r = 0.795 for females and r = 0.872 for males), for all p0.05. The results of this study suggested that CBCT imaging may be useful for estimating skeletal maturation in clinical practice, although they should not be used only for this purpose.
