Abstract in English
Considering the importance of higher education institutions and universities on the national scene, with regard to scientific production and the quality of education, it is essential to know the student profile of these institutions for in the future to invest in new educational plans which, in turn, should not dispense with the real profile of those who are the key players and main target plane. The central objective of the research is to investigate the reading habits profile and quality of life for students entering in 2014, dentistry and speech pathology of Bauru School of Dentistry , São Paulo. The sample consisted of 70 students. To collect data, we used a questionnaire with information about the quality of life and reading habits. As a result it was found that the undergraduates were between 18 and 21 years of age, declared themselves the most white, female and 34.8% male. Had a family monthly income on average and up to six minimum wages, predominantly single and childless and were supported by the family, few have paid academic activity. From the results it was concluded that the major stressors that interfered in life or academic context were financial difficulties, lack of discipline or study habits, excessive workload of academic work and learning disabilities. There was a statistically significant relationship between family income and other variables such as alcohol consumption. The greatest emotional difficulties interference in academic performance: anxiety and insomnia or significant change in sleep and to a lesser extent depression; indicated that the greatest damage to the academic life due to emotional issues were lack of motivation to study , difficulty concentrating, and low academic performance. Most students stated they drink alcohol occasionally, a minority declared to smoke and used drugs to control emotional difficulties, only 9.5% used illicit drugs. The majority had read at least one book in the last three months, but currently had read less a percentage of 57% of the course of dentistry and 48% of speech pathology, and the main reason to be less reading was a lack of time. Textbooks, texts on the Internet, textbooks were the most read and a lesser number romance. The university library was frequented by most university students.
