Keywords in Portuguese
Epidemiologia
Fluorose dentária
Qualidade de vida
Saúde bucal

Abstract in English
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the literature to assess the effect of fluorosis on the oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) of children and adolescents. Methods: A total of 304 articles were selected from the gray literature, manual search, PubMed, Scielo, BVS, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Studies that have investigated the effect on OHRQoL of groups with and without fluorosis until April 2021 were included. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed using the NewcastleOttawa Scale (NOS) and modified NOS tools. The meta-analysis of the data included for the quantitative analysis was performed using the random-effects model. Results: Thirteen 13 studies were included for qualitative synthesis and seven for quantitative synthesis. A total of 10 studies revealed the mildest degrees of fluorosis and no effect on OHRQoL. Only three studies reported the prevalence of the condition at the most severe levels with a negative effect on OHRQoL. The meta-analysis did not reveal significant differences (p = 0.234) in the effects on OHRQoL in the groups with and without fluorosis (95% confidence interval 0.06 to 0.26; heterogeneity, p-value = 0.234, value of Q 97.064; Tau 0.273; I2 96.9%). Conclusion: The results show that fluorosis did not negatively affect the OHRQoL of populations with mild dental fluorosis; however, this effect increased according to the severity of the condition.
