Abstract in English
Stroke is the second leading cause of death in Brazil. However, in many cases it can be prevented. The faster the diagnosis and the start of treatment, the chances of recovery are greater. The need to offer information about the injury, but also care for family caregivers with regard to burden, stress and coping strategies, there were the main motivation for planning this research, which aimed to develop a booklet for family caregivers of post-stroke patients focused on the practical and emotional demands of those. Since the stroke occurs suddenly, not everyone knows the basic concepts on the subject and soon need to deal with comprehensive care when the patient is discharged. Twelve family members of a post-stroke patient undergoing rehabilitation at Aphasia House participated in the study, allocated at the University of São Paulo (FOB / USP). To obtain data, in order to support the contents of the booklet, the following instruments were used: Informal Caregiver Burden Assessment Questionnaire: validation for Brazil, Katz Index, Stress Symptoms Inventory for Adults and the Inventory of Stress Strategies Coping. Still, studies on the topic were researched in databases. For the analysis of the answers, we opted for a descriptive analysis and, subsequently, the booklet with themes relevant to the family context was elaborated, data collected referring to the emotional aspects related to the family caregiver during the post-stroke patient rehabilitation process. The study indicated the need to look at those who care, to think about the emotional aspects based on the reality imposed on them, who most of the time are not prepared for sudden care and lack specific knowledge about the affection. Future investigations with this population are extremely relevant, since it is possible to further improve the quality of life of caregivers with relevant information and welcoming.
