Keywords in Portuguese
dentes artificias
prótese total
resina acrílica

Abstract in English
The processing of acrylic resins used in the construction of complete denture bases involve dimensional alterations, distortion and artificial tooth movement which may prevent the prosthesis from being used due to discomfort, inadequate occlusion and esthetics. This study evaluated the relationship between artificial tooth movement, with the procedures of inclusion, compression and polymerization of complete dentures bases. The sixty-four samples utilized were divided into four groups of 16 (8 lower and 8 upper) which received the following type of inclusion, compression and processing: a) group 1: in this group all samples were included in resin-fiber reinforced flasks, with a silicone mould, compression for one hour and microwave polymerization; b) group 2: in this group all samples were included in metallic flasks, with a silicone mould, compression for 12 hours and thermopolymerization in water bath, using a short duration cycle; c) group 3: in this group all samples were included with gypsum stone mould using an acrylic injector to insert the resin inside the flasks, followed by microwave polymerization, one hour after mould injection and; d) group 4: in this group all samples were included in metallic flasks, with a silicone mould, compression for one hour and thermopolymerization in water bath, using short duration cycle. According to the results the following conclusions were drawn: a) contraction was observed in all samples after processing; b) group 1 presented statistically significant less artificial tooth movement, relative to the others; c) comparing the upper and lower arches, regardless of the technique and measurements evaluated, no statistically significant difference was found; d) the compression time following inclusion and before prostheses polymerization had a negative effect on artificial tooth movement and e) the biggest discrepancies were found in the distance between contralateral molars, with statistically significant difference to other measurements.
