“In situ” evaluation of the effect of fluoride dentifrice on dental erosion associated or not to abrasion
Abstract in English
The aim of this study was to assess the effect of fluoride dentifrice in erosion associated or not to abrasion. An in situ crossed model, with 2 phases, was used in 10 volunteers who participated wearing intra oral palatal appliances containing 6 human enamel specimens. The appliances were submitted to erosion alone and erosion with abrasion under action of dentifrice with and without fluoride, with a total of 4 groups (G1 - erosion; G2 - erosion + toothbrushing; G3 - erosion + fluoride; G4 - erosion + toothbrushing + fluoride). The appliances were immersed in 150 mL of the soft drink for 5 minutes, 4 times/day. After that, the specimens were brushed in only one side, and the appliance was returned into the mouth. The wear and the superficial microhardness change were evaluated. Basic and acid enamel biopsies were perfomed in order to remove calcium fluoride and fluorapatite for the enamel blocks, respectively. The mean wear values (µm) for the 4 groups were: G1 – 3.63 ± 1.54; G2 – 6.84 ± 1.72; G3 – 3.54 ± 0.90 and G4 – 5.38 ± 1.21. There was statistical significance between G1 x G2; G3 x G4 and G2 x G4 (Anova and Tukey, p < 0.05). The percentages of superficial microhardness change (%) for the 4 groups were: G1 – 89.63 ± 4.73; G2 – 54.64 ± 16.24; G3 – 87.28 ± 4.01 and G4 – 45.68 ± 6.82. There was statistical significance between G1 x G2 and G3 x G4 (Anova and Tukey, p < 0.05). The results for basic biopsy (µg F/cm2)were: G1 – 1.27 ± 0.70; G2 – 1.0 ± 0.58; G3 – 1.49 ± 0.44 and G4 – 1.34 ± 0.65. The quantity of fluoride obtained in the acid biopsy (µg F/cm2) was: G1 – 2.24 ± 0.36; G2 – 1.96 ± 0.42; G3 – 2.24 ± 0.67 e G4 – 1.92 ± 0.35. There was not statistical significance between groups in quantity of fluoride (ANOVA, p > 0.05). The test soft drink caused loss of dental hard tissue, and the immediate toothbrushing enhanced it. The fluoride dentrifice had effect only in erosion/abrasion wear. The quantity of fluoride present in enamel did not vary among the groups and did not affect the results. Thus, more studies are necessary to clarify the role of the fluoride in erosion/abrasion.
