Com o agravamento das crises econômicas e sociais, aumentam também as iniquidades em saúde da população. A compreensão da complexidade do processo saúde-doença é fundamental no oferecimento de um cuidado mais efetivo, e um dos caminhos para formar profissionais mais capacitados se dá pela aproximação com a comunidade. A metodologia do community-based dental education é aplicada pela disciplina de Clínica Ampliada de Promoção de Saúde da Faculdade de Odontologia da Universidade de São Paulo por meio de atividades extramuros, e este trabalho teve como objetivo compreender a influência desta experiência junto à comunidade no processo de aprendizagem dos estudantes. Foi realizado um estudo de caso holístico e singular e, com auxílio do modelo para aprendizagem ao longo da vida da Academia Nacional de Ciências, Engenharia e Medicina de Washington, realizou-se a pesquisa documental dos portfólios produzidos pelos discentes inspirada pelo método de análise de Laurence Bardin. Como resultado, foi possível identificar um melhor entendimento de temas subjetivos e complexos, além da revisão de suposições, valores e preconceitos, pela aproximação com o território. O trabalho em equipe contribuiu na superação de dificuldades e no desenvolvimento psicossocial e crítico dos estudantes, e o vínculo com a comunidade indicou ter contribuído especialmente na compreensão da singularidade dos indivíduos, do processo social e da importância do cuidado humanizado. O estudo mostrou que, a partir do contato com a comunidade e do deslocamento do modelo tradicional de ensino, a complexidade do processo saúde-doença ganhou contexto, contribuindo em uma educação crítica, humanista e reflexiva para futuros profissionais mais capacitados a exercer um cuidado ampliado em saúde.

As economic and social crises worsen, health inequities in the population also increase. Understanding the complexity of the health-disease process is fundamental in offering more effective care, and one of the ways to train more qualified professionals is through the approach to the community. The methodology of community-based dental education is applied by the discipline of Extended Health Promotion Clinic of the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of São Paulo through extramural activities, and this work aimed to understand the influence of this experience with the community in the process students' learning process. A holistic and singular case study was carried out and, with the help of the lifelong learning model of the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine in Washington, a documentary research of the portfolios produced by the students was carried out, inspired by the method of analysis of Laurence Bardin. As a result, it was possible to identify a better understanding of subjective and complex themes, in addition to the revision of the students' assumptions, values and prejudices, due to the approximation with the territory. Teamwork contributed to overcoming difficulties and the students' psychosocial and critical development, and the link with the community indicated that they contributed especially to the understanding of the uniqueness of individuals, the social process and the importance of humanized care. The work showed that, from the contact with the community and the displacement of the traditional teaching model, the complexity of the health-disease process gained context, contributing to a critical, humanistic and reflective education for future professionals better able to exercise an expanded care in health.
