Introdução: Os medicamentos antirreabsortivos e antiangiogênicos são efetivos no tratamento da osteoporose e prevenção de eventos relacionados a metástase óssea. Entretanto podem apresentar um efeito adverso indesejável, a osteonecrose dos maxilares associada ao uso de medicamentos (OMAM), afetando de forma significativa na qualidade de vida desses pacientes. Objetivo: Comparar a densidade óssea de pacientes submetidos a medicação antirreabsortiva com pacientes controles, visando encontrar informações que possam auxiliar o radiologista e o clínico na previsão de riscos e acompanhamento da doença. Materiais e Métodos: Trinta e um pacientes tratados com ácido zoledrônico e 37 pacientes controles sem o uso da medicação foram incluídos na pesquisa. A análise de densidade foi realizada através de valores da escala Hounsfield obtidos a partir de exames de tomografia computadorizada helicoidal (TC). Resultados: A densidade óssea parece estar aumentada de forma estatisticamente significante tanto no osso da mandíbula quanto da vértebra cervical áxis em pacientes submetidos a medicação antirreabsortiva de forma mensal em relação aos pacientes do grupo controle. Conclusões: A TC parece ser um método potencialmente útil para a detecção de alterações associadas à terapia com bisfosfonatos, servindo como possível ferramenta na predição de possíveis quadros da doença.

Introduction: Antiresorptive and antiangiogenic drugs are effective in the treatment of osteoporosis and prevention of events related to bone metastasis. However, these drugs may have an undesirable adverse effect, which is medication related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ). This condition significantly affects the quality of life of these patients. Objective: To compare the bone density of patients undergoing antiresorptive medication with control patients, aiming to find information that may assist the radiologist and clinician in predicting risks and monitoring the disease. Materials and Methods: Thirty-one patients treated with zoledronic acid and 37 control patients not treated with zoledronic were included in the study. The density analysis was performed using values of the Hounsfield scale obtained from multislice computed tomography (CT) exams. Results: Bone density is statistically significantly increased in both jaw bone and cervical vertebra, in patients submitted to antiresorptive medication on a monthly basis when compared to patients in the control group. Conclusions: CT seems to be a potentially useful method for detecting alterations associated with bisphosphonate therapy, serving as a possible tool in the prediction of the disease progression.
