Abstract in English
Smoking is considered an important risk factor for periodontal and peri-implant diseases. Smokers are more likely to experience loss of teeth and implants, which can have a negative impact on the oral health-related quality of life of these patients. Thus, this study aimed to verify the impact of smoking cessation on patients' oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). Patients were followed from inclusion until one week after prosthesis placement. The OHIP-14 questionnaire was applied to assess the impact of smoking cessation on oral health-related quality of life. Patients who were able to stop smoking (NF) were compared with smokers who were unable to stop smoking (F) regarding all parameters, at baseline and after implantation of the prosthesis. In both groups, there was an improvement in OHRQoL, demonstrated by the reduction in the mean of OHIP-14 (p < 0.001). At baseline, there was no significant difference between the groups regarding the mean of OHIP-14 (p=1.00). After prosthesis installation, the mean of OHIP-14 was lower in the NF group (8.8) than in the F group (13.8); however, there was no significant difference between the two groups (p = 0.38). Further, there was no difference between the groups regarding the reduction of OHIP-14: 16.3 in the NF group and 11.7 in the F group (p=0.13). We conclude that there was no impact of smoking cessation on oral health-related quality of life.
