Keywords in Portuguese
Diabetes mellitus
Hemoglobina glicada
Periimplantite

Impact of the no-surgical treatment of the periimplantitis on glycated hemoglobin levels in patients with type 2 diabetes: a systematic review

Abstract in English
This review aimed to assess the impact of peri-implant treatment in reducing HbA1c levels in type 2 diabetic patients. Two randomized controlled trials and one non-randomized intervention study were included. The Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus and Embase databases were searched for articles published until June 2022. A risk of bias analysis was performed. Of the 278 potentially relevant articles, 2 randomized controlled trials and 1 non-randomized intervention study that evaluated peri-implant treatment through mechanical debridement and mechanical debridement using photodynamic therapy as adjunctive therapy were included. In none of the studies, there was a significant reduction in the levels of HbA1c in diabetic patients after the treatment of peri-implantitis in the control groups, only in one study there was a reduction in the levels of HbA1c after the treatment. None of the included studies had a low risk of bias. The results of this systematic review do not allow us to conclude that peri-implantitis treatment in type 2 diabetic patients decreases HbA1c levels.
