Abstract in English
Aim: The objective of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the prevalence of mucositis (Mi) and peri-implantitis (Pi) in patients complaining of symptoms related to Pi and Mi, treated with implant-supported prosthesis and assess its association with local, systemic and environmental factors. Methods: Forty-three patients with 150 implants restored with implant-supported prosthesis, for at least 5 years, and complaining of symptoms related to peri-implant disease were recruited for clinical and radiographic examination. Implant-supported prosthesis characteristics, smoking habits, general, periodontal and peri-implant health status were assessed to establish the prevalence of peri-implant disease and its association with local, systemic and environmental factors. Results: Mean patient age was 58.81 (33-74), among which 20 were female and 23 were male. Periimplantitis and mucositis were diagnosed in 31 (72%) and 12 (28%) patients, respectively. Implant-based prevalence of peri-implantitis and mucositis amounted to 90 (58.44%) and 60 (38.96%), respectively. Diabetes was associated with peri-implantitis at an odds ratio of OR = 10.01 (p=0.002). Full-arch (FAFP) and partial (PFP) implant-supported fixed prosthesis were associated with Pi at an odds ratio of OR = 10.01 and 9.36 (p=0.002), respectively. Internal (IH) and external hexagon (EH) abutment was associated with Pi at an odds ratio of OR = 8.80 (p=0.003) and 9.35 (p=0.002), respectively. Peri-implant pocket-probing depth (PD) 6 mm was associated with the presence of vertical bone defect at an odds ratio of OR = 1.09 (p=0.003). Presence of more than one implant per patient and diabetes was associated with an odds ratio of OR = 7.72 (p=0.005). Conclusion: Patients complaining of symptoms related to Pi and Mi showed a high prevalence of periimplant disease. Diabetes, FAFP, PFP, IH and EH abutment was associated with higher chance of Pi occurrence. PPD 6 mm was associated with the presence of vertical bone defect. Diabetic patients with more than on implant showed a higher chance of Pi occurrence.
