Abstract in English
In order to assist orthodontists on choosing brackets with less potential to induce local or systemic toxicity to their patients, this study aimed at comparing different manufacturers of orthodontic brackets and at identifying the ones that released less amounts of nickel (Ni) and chromium (Cr) in simulated oral environments. 280 brackets were equally divided according to the following models and manufacturers: (1) Kirium Line® Abzil®, (2) Mini Master Series® American Orthodontics®, (3) Discovery® Dentaurum®, (4) Full Size® Unitek®, (5) Morelli M.B.T. ® Morelli®, (6) NuEdge® TP Orthodontics®, and (7) Victory® Unitek®. International standard ISO 10271/2001 was applied to provide test methods. Each bracket was immersed in 0.5 mL of synthetic saliva or artificial plaque fluid during 28 days at 37°C. Solutions were replaced every 7 days, and were analyzed by means of an electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometer (ETAAS) or by an inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP OES) to quantify (g L-1) the amount of Ni and Cr released. Kruskall-Wallis test was applied to determine if differences existed between Ni and Cr release according to bracket manufacturers and to solutions. Results indicated that brackets from different manufacturers presented different corrosion behavior. In addition, artificial plaque fluid induced more Ni and Cr release then artificial saliva. It was therefore concluded that brackets from Dentaurum® presented the less quantities of Ni and Cr released in both studied solutions. Increasing rates of Ni and Cr were detected to the following manufacturers: Victory® Unitek®, American®, TP®, Full Size® Unitek®, Morelli® e Abzil®.
