The high rates of bullying occurrences and its consequences for those involved in them characterize such problem as a global one in public health. School Bullying has been described as a type of intentional, repetitive violence with an imbalance of power between victims and aggressors, that is, among students. This notion of violence permeates this study, which aimed to understand the experience of students identified as observers and witnesses of bullying at school. It is a qualitative-descriptive research developed in a private school in the city of Franca, SP. Twenty students of the 9th grade of elementary school and from three grades of high school were chosen to participate in the research according to the saturation criteria. Data were derived from answers to a diagnostic questionnaire on bullying testimonies (occurrences in the six months before the phase of information gathering), from answers in interviews (semi-structured and individual) and accounts in focus group sessions (two sessions with male students, two with female students, separately). The research followed assumptions of social cognitive theory by Albert Bandura. Data generated were analyzed according to the thematic analysis criteria of Braun and Clarke. In the diagnosis, it was found that 79% of students indicated that bullying happens at school. Results were grouped into five thematic categories (testimony of bullying at school; explanations for the occurrence of bullying; attitude, reinforcement and feelings; logics for intervention; schools and families). In the data set, students attribute additional meanings to the phenomenon of bullying and do not reduce it to the manifestation of physical violence. It was also found that the participants demonstrate knowledge of bullying situations as a problem, but that they often lack the sense of self-efficacy to adopt actions to help or defend the victims. The study also reveals that the participants only acted in the face of a bullying situation when there was an affectionate or intimate relationship with the victim. The experience of female students and male students differed little when it comes to individual dialogues (interviews) and collective dialogues (focus group sessions). Even though, it is worth noting the importance of observer students as a group of high potential to prevent bullying at school. This potential, however, needs to be explored through institutional actions that allow such students to increase their sense of self-efficacy and collective responsibility as to addressing bullying events they witness at school.
