Abstract in English
This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of anemia among pregnant women attended by the Prenatal Program of the Single Health System in Irati-PR, Brazil in 2004. A descriptive, transversal and retrospective study was realized, based on secondary data. To characterize the pregnant women, we collected sociodemographic 'Information, obstetric and hemoglobin/hematocrit counts during the prenatal program. Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) was used for data analysis. Studenfs paired t-test and Pearson's Correlation. The study population consisted of the 550 pregnant women attended by the Prenatal Program. 48 of them presented Hb<11 g/dL, which corresponds to a prevalence levei of 8.7%. From the 48 pregnant women studied, the maternal average age was 25 years (s.d. 7 years), 31,3% were adolescent, 49,9% were adults and 18,8% were old-aged pregnant women. As for the years of study, 14,6% of the pregnant women studied less than 4 years, 4,2% were illiterate, 35,4% studied from 4 to 7 years and among the 29,2% of the women that studied more than eleven years, just 4,2% were graduated. Among the 48 anemic pregnant women, 50% were married, 35,4% were single, while the others lived with their partners (14,6%). The statistic tests showed difference statistically significant difference between Hb1 and 2 and between Ht1 and 2. We can observe that among the anemic pregnant women, most part of them had decreased Hb and Ht, in the two exams during the prenatal program. This study showed low prevalence of anemia among the studied pregnant women. Due to the use of secondary data, anemia prevalence leveis may be underestimated. However is expressive the prevalence of anemia among pregnant adolescents. This show the necessity in develop specific actions and programs to the prevention of anemia in pregnant women, particularly adolescents.
