Keywords in Portuguese
Enfermagem psiquiátrica

Hospitais estatais

The role of psychiatric nurses in a state macro-hospital: analysis of a group experience

Abstract in English
This work aims to describe and group analyse the performance of the psychiatric nurse in a state psychiatric macro-hospital, understanding it as a partial result of historical and social transformations. However, the interpersonal relationships are especially focused, as well as their implications on tasks development of mul tiprofessional staffs of the mentioned hospital. The data which enabled such objectives were colected in meetings of a group constituted by four psychiatric nurses who had worked together at the hospital from june 1986 to february 1988. The methodology used in this work is based on the principles of the research-action expressed by THIOLLENT, which preconize that the group of researchers must actively participate in all the investigation steps. The results of this work suggest that the performance on this professional field is multidetermined: it depends on factors related to the nurse's academic formation, the professional's personal characteristics and the structural characteristics of the society itself, especially those which affect and are affected by the health politics and, therefore, by the mental health politics.
