A partir da vivência profissional com o indivíduo, portador de distúrbio mental, assim como, de seus familiares questionamos a visão dos mesmos a respeito deste processo de adoecer e suas respectivas convivências com a assistência disponível. Assim, buscamos conhecimentos e métodos para encontrar respostas. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi conhecer as opiniões sobre saúde/doença mental e assistência, junto a uma amostra constituída de 250 sujeitos, (100 portadores, 109 familiares e 41 profissionais) em dois serviços psiquiátricos no Rio Grande do Sul. Construímos e validamos uma escala de Medida de Opinião - EMO, composta por 56 afirmativas sobre Saúde e Doença Mental onde o sujeito demonstra seu grau de concordância com o conteúdo expresso. Os dados quantitativos foram analisados com provas não-paramétricas e os qualitativos através de comparações entre as respostas que sobressaíram nos três grupos nas duas categorias: Conceito e Assistência em Saúde e Doença Mental. Dessas análises, concluímos que os grupos diferem tanto na categoria Conceito como na categoria Assistência; os portadores estão mais concordantes com relação às afirmações sobre os Conceitos seguidos dos familiares e dos profissionais. Sobre a Assistência, houve maior concordância dos familiares, seguido dos portadores e dos profissionais. O teste Wilcoxon permitiu concluir que os portadores e os profissionais tendem a concordar mais frequentemente com relação ao Conceito de Saúde/Doença Mental do que com Assistência. Das respostas ao EMO, analisadas qualitativamente, destacamos que houve maior concordância quanto o Conceito de que cuidar do doente mental é uma tarefa difícil e pouco valorizada como competência profissional e carrega o equívoco de que o uso de drogas leva à doença mental. Esta questão traz para a enfermagem uma preocupação, pois muitos desses profissionais não são reconhecidos como alguém que precisa de preparo para trabalhar com doentes mentais. Com relação à Assistência, concordam principalmente que a única solução para o problema do doente mental é a internação em hospital psiquiátrico e que pouco se sabe sobre a loucura, a doença mental, seus limites e suas delimitações. A partir dessa pesquisa, estamos convencidas da importância do papel da família e de profissionais engajados no processo de Assistência em Saúde e Doença Mental. Este estudo permite profundas reflexões sobre a assistência em saúde mental sendo importante contribuição temática e metodológica, nesta área.

Based on the professional practice with patients with mental disorders as well as their families, the author questioned their view about the process of getting ill and their experiences with the available care. Therefore, the author searched for knowledge and methods in order to find those answers. The aim of this research was to learn the opinion about mental health/illness and the care of a sample of 250 subjects (100 patients, 109 family members and 41 health professionals) involved in two psychiatric Services of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The author constructed and validated a scale of opinion measurement, formed by 56 affirmations about mental health/illness in which the subjects show their agreement to the expressed content. Quantitative data were analysed with non-parametric proves and qualitative data through comparisons among the relevant responses in the three groups in the two categories: Concept and Care in Health and Mental lllness. From those analyses, the author concluded that the groups differ regarding the two categories; patients agree with respect to affirmations on the concept followed by family members and professionals. Considering care, the author found a greater agreement among the family members, followed by patients and health professionals. The Wilcoxon test enabled the conclusion that patients and professionals agree more frequently with the concept of mental health/illness than with the care. Regarding the responses to the scale of opinion measurement, they were qualitatively analysed and the author emphasized a greater agreement with respect to the concept that providing care to a mental patient is a difficult task and not well valued as a professional competence and, also, that carries the idea that the use of drugs causes mental illness. This question is a concern to nursing, as there is not the idea that health professionals need to be prepared to work with mental patients. Considering care, they agree mainly that the only solution for the problem is hospitalization and they do not know much about madness, mental illnesses and their limits. Based on the results, the author is convinced about the importance of the role of family members and professionals involved in the process of care in mental health/illnesss. This study enabled a deep reflection about care in mental health and is an important thematic and methodologic contribution in the area.
