This study performed the characterization of the Western South Atlantic from MIS 9 to MIS 1 based on the study of planktonic foraminifera from two deep sea piston cores collected in the Santos Basin. According to the results presented here, all glacial stages exhibited periods of heat accumulation except MIS 3. This, in turn, was characterized by exhibiting the last subtropical glacial maximum in approximately 43,6 thousand years; this cooling would be related to the releasing of accumulated heat in the Southern Hemisphere to the Northern Hemisphere due to the strengthening of AMOC (Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation). The glacial intervals with the highest heat accumulation were the 8c 8b interval, the 6c substage, the MIS 4 and MIS 2, all related to the redirection of heat excess to the South Atlantic during times of AMOC slowdown. The highest CaCO3 dissolution intervals were observed during the glacials at the 8c 8b interval, at the 6e 6d interval and at the MIS 4; however, interglacial intervals also exhibited CaCO3 dissolution events, recorded at substages 9b, 7d, 5d, and 5b. The dissolution periods are also related to the weakening of AMOC, which altered the NADW convection depth, modified the geometry of deep water masses and, consequently, decreased the depth of lysocline in the Western South Atlantic. Increased upwelling intensity, characterized by its offshore expansion, is not a unique feature of interglacials MIS. In addition, MIS 7 did not exhibit increased upwelling intensity as in 9e and 5e, but was analogous to that observed at the end of the penultimate glacial stage. Other factors that contributed to the increase in marine surface productivity were the increase in the mixing layer turbulence, providing nutrients accumulated in the Maximum Chlorophyll Depth to the photic zone and the influence of the Rio da Prata plume, increasing the distribution of organic matter to the ocean floor especially during glacials. It was not possible to determine a glacial pattern or an interglacial pattern in the western South Atlantic because each MIS exhibited very particular characteristics. However, some events were common between glacial and interglacial intervals.
