O Canal de São Sebastião é um canal costeiro, heterogêneo em sua distribuição sedimentar e complexo em relação à hidrodinâmica, separando o continente da Ilha de São Sebastião. Por sua complexidade, importância e carência de dados em subsuperfície, o presente trabalho buscou compreender a evolução do canal por meio de sua geomorfologia atual e pretérita. Para isso, fez-se uso de fontes acústicas por métodos sísmicos e sonográficos que permitiram a identificação e o mapeamento de feições geomorfológicas, bem como estruturas geológicas, em superfície e subsuperfície. Por meio de modelos digitais de terreno, realizou-se a reconstrução das feições que, inclusive, possibilitaram a identificação de paleoambientes ao associá-los com datações e análises sedimentológicas provenientes de testemunhagens. Os resultados constataram: um vestígio de ligação entre a Ilha de São Sebastião com a Serra do Mar por meio da proximidade do embasamento rochoso ao centro do canal, produto do recuou erosivo da serra e passagem de drenagens; uma paleosuperfície (Paleosuperfície Norte) associada ao ambiente de mar baixo com idades superiores a 45 mil anos, possuindo uma distribuição por toda a porção norte e, possivelmente, perpetuação abaixo do pontal arenoso e a região de deposição. Por estar relacionada ao ambiente de mar baixo, a feição mais profunda ao longo da margem insular pode ser indicativo de passagem de drenagem; em seguida, as evidências de mar alto dispostos na literatura corroboram para que o pontal arenoso, antiga ilha barreira, tenha seu período de formação entre 45 a 25 mil anos; posteriormente, a regressão marinha possibilitou a passagem do antigo rio Juqueriquerê pelo canal, com maiores proporções em relação ao atual, o que geraria a Paleosuperfície Central distribuída ao centro do canal seguindo em direção ao sul pela calha primária, havendo a hipótese que seja acúmulo de gás em função da alta amplitude do refletor e mascaramento das camadas subjacentes; com a rápida transgressão marinha, após os 9.500 anos A.P. iniciou-se uma curta fase de ambiente mixohalino dentro do canal até em 8.000 anos A.P.. Esta transgressão também afogou uma antiga planície costeira ao sul do canal, marcada por diversos paleocanais originários da praia de Baraqueçaba e estruturas de acúmulos de gás encontrados na coluna sedimentar. Este afogamento proporcionou a formação da unidade holocênica de origem marinha controlada pelo regime de ondas, apresentando uma morfologia tabular; por fim, a subida do nível do mar afogou completamento o canal em 7.000 anos A.P., permanecendo assim até os dias de hoje, possibilitando a formação de camadas sedimentares recentes e a erosão do pontal arenoso que encontrava-se ao longo da Enseada de Caraguatatuba. Deste modo, as feições submersas encontradas são um reflexo da hidrodinâmica, eustasia e geometria do canal, não havendo continuidade lateral das unidades ao longo do canal devido a carácter erosivo na porção central e norte em razão da intensificação das correntes.

The São Sebastião Channel is a coastal channel, heterogeneous in its sedimentary distribution and complex in relation to hydrodynamics, separating the continent from São Sebastião Island. Due to its complexity, importance and lack of data in the subsurface, the present work sought to understand the evolution of the channel through its current and past geomorphology. For this, acoustic sources were used by seismic and sonographic methods that allowed the identification and mapping of geomorphological features, as well as geological structures, on surface and subsurface. Using digital terrain models, the features were reconstructed, which even enabled the identification of paleoenvironments by associating them with dating and sedimentological analyzes from witnesses. The results showed: a trace of the connection between the Island of São Sebastião and the Serra do Mar through the proximity of the rocky basement to the center of the channel, the product of the erosive retreat of the mountain and the passage of drains; a paleosurface (North Paleosurface) associated with the low-sea environment with ages older than 45 thousand years, with a distribution throughout the northern portion and possibly perpetuation below the sandy point and the deposition region. As it is related to the low sea environment, the deeper feature along the island margin may be indicative of a drainage passage; then, the evidence of the high seas in the literature corroborates that the sandy point, former barrier island, has its formation period between 45 and 25 thousand years; later, the marine regression allowed the passage of the old Juqueriquerê river through the channel, with greater proportions in relation to the current one, which would generate the Central Paleosurface distributed to the center of the channel, going southwards through the primary channel, with the hypothesis that it is an accumulation of gas due to the high amplitude of the reflector and masking of the underlying layers; with the rapid marine transgression, after 9.500 years, a short phase of the mixohalino environment began inside the channel until around 8.000 years. This transgression also drowned an old coastal plain south of the canal, marked by several paleochannels originating from Baraqueçaba beach and structures of gas accumulations found in the sedimentary column. This drowning provided the formation of the holocenic unit of marine origin controlled by the wave regime, presenting a tabular morphology; finally, the rise in sea level completely drowned the channel around 7.000 years ago, remaining so until today, allowing the formation of recent sedimentary layers and the erosion of the sandy point that was found along the Inlet of Caraguatatuba. In this way, the submerged features found are a reflection of the hydrodynamics, eustasia and geometry of the channel, with no lateral continuity of the units along the channel due to the erosive character in the central and northern portion due to the intensification of the currents.
