Abstract in English
The São Sebastião Channel is a coastal channel, heterogeneous in its sedimentary distribution and complex in relation to hydrodynamics, separating the continent from São Sebastião Island. Due to its complexity, importance and lack of data in the subsurface, the present work sought to understand the evolution of the channel through its current and past geomorphology. For this, acoustic sources were used by seismic and sonographic methods that allowed the identification and mapping of geomorphological features, as well as geological structures, on surface and subsurface. Using digital terrain models, the features were reconstructed, which even enabled the identification of paleoenvironments by associating them with dating and sedimentological analyzes from witnesses. The results showed: a trace of the connection between the Island of São Sebastião and the Serra do Mar through the proximity of the rocky basement to the center of the channel, the product of the erosive retreat of the mountain and the passage of drains; a paleosurface (North Paleosurface) associated with the low-sea environment with ages older than 45 thousand years, with a distribution throughout the northern portion and possibly perpetuation below the sandy point and the deposition region. As it is related to the low sea environment, the deeper feature along the island margin may be indicative of a drainage passage; then, the evidence of the high seas in the literature corroborates that the sandy point, former barrier island, has its formation period between 45 and 25 thousand years; later, the marine regression allowed the passage of the old Juqueriquerê river through the channel, with greater proportions in relation to the current one, which would generate the Central Paleosurface distributed to the center of the channel, going southwards through the primary channel, with the hypothesis that it is an accumulation of gas due to the high amplitude of the reflector and masking of the underlying layers; with the rapid marine transgression, after 9.500 years, a short phase of the mixohalino environment began inside the channel until around 8.000 years. This transgression also drowned an old coastal plain south of the canal, marked by several paleochannels originating from Baraqueçaba beach and structures of gas accumulations found in the sedimentary column. This drowning provided the formation of the holocenic unit of marine origin controlled by the wave regime, presenting a tabular morphology; finally, the rise in sea level completely drowned the channel around 7.000 years ago, remaining so until today, allowing the formation of recent sedimentary layers and the erosion of the sandy point that was found along the Inlet of Caraguatatuba. In this way, the submerged features found are a reflection of the hydrodynamics, eustasia and geometry of the channel, with no lateral continuity of the units along the channel due to the erosive character in the central and northern portion due to the intensification of the currents.
