Abstract in English
The ability to understand estuarine morphology and hydrodynamics associated with temporal evolution is essential for coastal management, navigation and the environment. This pioneer study presents the morphological evolution and its implications in the estuarine processes in Santos Estuary System - SP (SES), especially in the port channel. Through the validation of a hydrodynamic numerical model (Delft3D) for current data, scenarios with earlier bathymetries (1876 to 2014) were elaborated for the evaluation of the hydrodynamic evolution of the SES. Results shows that, between 1876 and 2014, SES underwent significant morphological changes, mainly in its bathymetry in the Santos port channel due to dredging, as well as variations in estuarine processes occur where changes in morphology occur. Analyzes of the Estuary water volume variation suggests that the port channel volume has increased by 12,5x106 m3 over more than a century, representing an increase of 28% of the capacity of the Santos port channel from 1876 to 2014. The year 2014 was the scenario of greater differences compared to the others. There was a greater saline intrusion in the port channel, decreased of volumes of water transported in 60% in the channel of Santos, increased tidal influence on the system and increased asymmetry up estuary over the years. Temporal changes in estuaries and their effects ought to have special attention and may be a tool for future projections of rising sea levels and climate change scenarios and to support the management of this fragile ecosystem. The unprecedented results of the hydrodynamic evolution of the SES show that the gradual process of channel deepening due to dredging results in local changes of estuarine circulation parameters, such as tidal propagation and stratification of the water column; as well as parameters related to the entire estuarine system, such as water transport, and consequently material transport, throughout the SES channels.
