Abstract in English
The study aims to relate variations in temperature, salinity, taxonomic diversity, and functional traits of microphytoplankton (cells larger than 20 µm) observed in the Caraguatatuba and Ubatuba collected between August 2013 and February 2015, with different degrees of anthropic actions. The samplings occurred in different seasons of the year, showing hydrodynamic and meteorological variability. Chlorophyll-a concentrations displayed larger values in some nearshore stations in Caraguatatuba, concurrently with a consistently higher density of microphytoplankton, with magnitudes comparable to those found in estuarine regions. Microphytoplankton communities at both sampling sites were diverse and uniform, however, showing high turnover values and eventual dominance of given genera driven by changes in the environment. The functional physiological typologies could better explain communities' organization than taxonomy, and although temporal patterns of diversity of both were similar, high magnitudes were found at Ubatuba, highlighting the importance of chain-forming diatoms. The diversities decreased during warm and rainy samplings when some genera abundances dominated (i.e., Asterionellopsis or Chaetoceros), chiefly guided by temperature. Comparing Caraguatatuba and Ubatuba, the major microphytoplankton traits observed favored photosynthetic growth and protection against grazing, although with distinct dominant genera and lower cell abundances in Ubatuba. These results can aid future phytoplankton monitoring efforts in São Paulo state shores.
