Seazonal variation of the taxonomic composition and biogenic nature of the particle vertical flux at the Southwest Brazilian outer shelf

Abstract in English
The ocean biological pump removes atmospheric CO2 and stores it at great depths for long time spans. The surplus primary production biomass sinks in the form of Particulate Organic Carbon (POC). Several planktonic organisms act on the biological pump and a fraction of these synthesize Biogenic Particles (Pbio), structures made of CaCO3 or SiO4, that do not undergo microbial degradation. After the organisms death, the flux of Pbio vertically transports POC, CaCO3 and SiO4 due to its ballast. The South Brazil Bight (SBB) is an oceanographic diverse region where processes like meandering vortices and upwelling change the environmental conditions, influencing the plankton communities, thus the Pbio flux. Through the microscopic analyses of 16 samples collected by sediment trap at SBB, between December 2016 and September 2017, the Pbio fluxes were calculated for different groups, with a peak of 289, 752.5Pbio · m-2 · d-1 occurring in April 2017. Diatoms and dinoflagellates dominated the Pbio flux, with mean values of 57, 929.39 and 43, 006.79Pbio · m-2 · d-1 respectively. The flux of radiolarians (9, 556.04Pbio · m-2 · d-1), silicoflagellates (7, 271.64Pbio · m-2 · d-1), foraminifera (22, 416.44Pbio · m-2 · d-1) and tintinids (9, 333.67Pbio · m-2 · d-1) were less intense, but with a high diversity of Pbio producing organisms.
