Abstract in English
This research has as the main purpose to discuss the theme of democracy from the Critical Theory's perspective, or of the "Frankfurt School's", as it became known, with a special focus on the models of Axel Honneth and Rainer Forst. In this sense, first, we will seek to recover the historical evolution of this tradition of thought, as well as two of its most important models of social theory still related to the first generation of Frankfurtians thinkers: the "interdisciplinary materialism" and the "instrumental reason". In this way, an approximation of the paradigmatic change perceived in the philosophical presuppositions of this current's works will also be realized, starting from the second generation of researchers, who migrated from the "paradigm of production" to the "paradigm of communication", mainly due to the influence of Jürgen Habermas, to which the analysis will be dedicated. As for this author, the purpose will be to understand how he came to his well-known "theory of communicative action", reaching, for example, part of the theoretical debate he had with Herbert Marcuse. Turning to the models of democracy, the first step will be to retake the reference model for the subsequent ones, specifically the "discursive theory of deliberative democracy", also authored by Jürgen Habermas. Then, the focus will take proper care of the theoretical work of Axel Honneth and Rainer Forst. Concerning Honneth, the first step will be to outline his "recognition theory", with an emphasis on how he articulates the ideas of "spheres of recognition" and "social struggle", especifically to introduce his model of "democracy as reflective cooperation". As for work by Forst, the aim will first be to address his original conception of "contexts of recognition and justification", which lays the foundation for his model of "democracy as a practice of justification", to be developed in the sequel. Finally, from these theoretical perspectives, a look will be taken on the situation of democracy in Brazil, seeking to retake some of its political and social aspects, with small historical incursions on the democratic path built so far. Finally, there is a diagnostic essay on the depth of the Brazilian democracy, as well as an attempt to indicate the challenges that are posed in the context of a new obscurity.
