Religiões afro-brasileiras (século XIX-XXI)

Abstract in English
This research aims to understand the relation between law and Afro-Brazilian Religions in the nineteenth century. To this end, the first chapters deal with "batuques", "zungus", "casas de dar fortuna", "candombes", "candombles", aiming to map among their multiple meanings which were used to refer to religious manifestations. Through the analysis of the reports about the objects found in such locations, we aimed o deaw parallels and approximations between the nineteenth century Afro-Brazilian religious practices and the current ones. Subsequently, the stories of some African cult priests were used as a mean of glimpsing the cults and cerimonies, as well as understanding how the bargaining and compromise relations allowed the cults to survive. Raising to the notoriety some of the wizards, healers or priests and enabling them to achieve relative economic success. Finally, it was discussed the frailty of such agreements and the reasons that could have led to the increase of the persecution against AfroBrazilian religious phenomena in the late nineteenth century.
