Keywords in Portuguese

violência

Abstract in English
According to data published by the Brazilian Forum on Public Security (FBSP) and the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA), around 300 to 500 thousand rapes are annually perpetrated in Brazil, considering an under-reporting rate of around 90% for these crimes. These alarming numbers reveal how urgent are studies and programs which allow the reduction of the sexual violence rates. This bibliographic revision aims to provide, to professionals, institutions and the public, a criminological analysis that encompass themes like masculinity, psychopathology, violence and rape. Taking as parameter the sexual aggressors' feelings, biographies and discourses, the concepts applied are intertwined with others derived from areas as Law, Psychoanalysis, Anthropology, Sociology and Criminology. The conclusion is that it is possible to comprehend the various types of rape as inserted in a gradient spectrum, which, in one extreme, appears to be intimately related to virile conceptions of masculinity, and, in another, to psychopathology and trauma. According to the resulting theorical structure, institutional, political and legal measures can be proposed with scientifical foundation, aiming towards the prevention of sexual violence, and, consequently, the reduction on the rates of rape.
