Abstract in English
In recent decades, several studies have been carried out with the aim of making the additive manufacturing feasible in laboratory and industrial environments due to the inherent advantages of this process in relation to traditional manufacturing processes, in which stand out the cost reduction, waste of materials' minimization and ability to manufacture parts with complex geometry without the need for post-processing and manufacture of prototypes or parts with low production scale. However, the field of study of additive manufacturing of ceramic materials still presents great challenges to enable the widespread use of the process in the production of commercial parts, making it difficult to manufacture ceramic parts with high geometric predictability and control of flaws. Contributing to the advancement of this area, we propose a preliminary study of the direct additive manufacturing process by laser engineered net shaping (LENS) in alumina and electrofused mullite, varying the laser beam power of the manufacturing equipment and the chemical composition of the material through the addition of binder materials, in order to optimize the properties of flexural strength, micro-hardness and density. The final piece will be subjected to optical and electronic microscopy, X-ray diffraction, three-point flexural strength, micro-hardness and density tests, for analysis of mechanical and structural properties. The results of relative density and hardness obtained are considered satisfactory, being possible to obtain mullite cords with 93% relative density and maximum hardness of 1670 Vickers microhardness, a result equivalent to published data for the same material produced through conventional manufacturing processes.
