Abstract in English
In this work a comparative study between SAE 1566 steel (high carbon content) and SAE 15B36 steel (medium carbon boron steel) was applied in the production of sugarcane cutting blades, and the possibility of substitution of SAE 1566 steel by SAE 15B36 steel was evaluated. The steels were produced in the form of billets and were hot rolled until the blade profile was obtained. SAE 1566 steel blades were subjected to quenching heat treatment followed by tempering at temperatures of 300ºC, 350ºC, 400ºC, 450ºC and 500ºC. SAE 15B36 steel blades were produced under two conditions: no tempering after quenching heat treatment, and tempering at 200°C after quenching heat treatment. Comparative tests of hardness, tensile strength, toughness, wear resistance, metallographic analysis, scanning electron microscopy and field test were performed. The best tempering temperature for SAE 1566 steel was 450°C, considering the toughness and hardness results obtained. SAE 15B36 only quenched, had higher toughness, hardness and wear resistance than SAE 1566 tempered steel at 450 °C and better field test performance. The results show that it is possible to replace quenched and tempered SAE 1566 steel with quenched only SAE 15B36 steel, eliminating tempering in the blade production process.
