Abstract in English
The zirconium-based bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) stand out due to their high glass forming ability (GFA), high thermal stability and excellent mechanical properties. However, oxygen contamination can significantly affect their GFA and mechanical properties. Oxygen presence can favor the crystallization mechanism and, when in solution in the amorphous matrix, causes embrittlement. The present work evaluated the influence of different oxygen concentrations, from 150 to 2000 ppm (part per million by weight), on the GFA and mechanical properties, by bending test, of the BMG Vitreloy® 106a (Vit 106a). In addition to that, aiming to reduce the oxygen negative effect, it was studied the addition of yttrium (stoichiometric to the oxygen content – 1000 ppm) on the GFA and mechanical behavior of the Vit 106a when submitted to bending tests. The microstructural analyses of the samples contaminated with different oxygen contents have revealed an increase of crystalline fraction following oxygen increment. The diffraction patterns have shown the presence of the known big cube phase for samples contaminated with 900, 1000 and 2000 ppm of oxygen. Bending tests have shown a fracture resistance and ductility reduction, and, for samples with more than 900 ppm of oxygen, plastic deformation was imperceptible. Fracture surface analyses have suggested that the presence of oxygen destabilize the Vit 106a plastic deformation process and the crystals formed, possibly contribute to accelerate the catastrophic fracture process. For samples with yttrium, microstructural analyses and diffraction pattern have revealed the yttrium oxide exclusive formation, as well as, a GFA enhancement. Bending tests have shown a significative fracture resistance improvement and some plastic deformation. Fracture surface analyses have suggested that yttrium addition aided the shear banding process stabilization and the yttrium oxide appeared also to drag the main shear band propagation.
