Abstract in English
Precipitation is a particularly important and variable element in time and space, whose occurrence of extreme events has the potential to cause significant impacts on the population and landscape. Understanding the temporal and spatial behavior of precipitation in tropical areas is extremely relevant, considering its impact on urban and rural dynamics and thus on strategic planning. In this same perspective, orography is a factor that can contribute to this process triggered by the atmosphere, presenting spatial influences through the regional particularities of each topographic and altimetric surface. In Brazil, the vast majority of studies on orographic rainfall are concentrated in the regions of higher altitudes, located on the east coast of the Brazilian territory and little explored in the interior of the country, where residual plateaus with lower altimetric levels are located, such as the relief of Basaltic Cuestas located in the interior of the State of São Paulo. Therefore, the objective of this research was to analyze the influences of geomorphological characteristics of relief on rainfall in the central region of the State of São Paulo, through daily data from surface and satellite stations in a minimum period of 30 years. 31 surface stations with historical rainfall series observed from 1979 to 2019 were used. In addition to the stations, a historical series of estimated data by satellite from 1981 to 2019, from the CHIRPS product, was used. The statistical methodologies used were climate indices, variability, classification, trend, validation, and, finally, the selection of representative episodes to identify the effect of relief on the behavior, distribution, and intensification of rainfall. The results showed that: 1 - In the central-southern region of the study area, a greater recurrence in the temporal and spatial concentration of rainfall volume in millimeters (PRCTOT, RX1 day, RX5 days) and in the number of days (DCS, DCU, and RX46mm) was observed over these plateau locations. 2 - The classification and selection of standard years showed a pattern of 46% of the years within the usual range in the southern, central, and northern regions, 24% rainy in the centralsouthern region, and 30% dry in the southeastern region. 3 - The extreme years of the historical series (1979-2019) in relation to the annual average of 1468.8 mm indicate that the year 1983 was considered the rainiest (>30%), concentrating high volumes of rainfall in locations in the central-southern region, while 2014 was considered the driest (<30%), with a more prolonged drought in the northern region of the study area. 4 - Trends show a decrease in annual accumulations (PRCTOT) of 87%, a reduction in accumulated volume in five days (RX5) of 45%; on the other hand, there was a consistency within the standard for DCS, DCU, RX1 of over 50%, and a 43% increase in extreme daily rainfall (RX>46mm), mainly in the central region of the study area. 5 - The validation and verification of CHIRPS data are satisfactory. However, the time intervals of the stations used or not used as anchors by CHIRPS, associated with the reduction in surface station density, influence the overall and monthly quality of the compared data (observed and estimated). 6 - Terrain characteristics (altitude and slope) and seasonality also influence the quality of performance and the relationship of the data set, spatially depending on the availability or not of anchor stations. 7 - Trends showed the same pattern of rainfall variability during the period 1981-2019, indicating a prevalence of precipitation distribution reduction in the west and north and an increase in the east and south areas, in the volume of rainfall within the study area. 8 - The representative episodes showed that the presence of orography influences rainfall, pointing to a circulation pattern in the preference of the direction of rainfall intensification in ZCAS events or frontal system entries, in the orientation quadrant SO-S-SE, mainly in the central and southern regions of the study area. Therefore, the relief of the central region of São Paulo state, despite presenting a low-altitude topography, exerts an important orographic influence on circulation dynamics, spatial distribution, and regional rainfall intensification in the face of meteorological events operating in the region, such as ZCAS or SFs, especially during the wet period (October to March) of the altitude tropical climate. For future studies within this theme, the use of geostatistical models through topographical indexes is recommended, which allows for the evaluation of the influence of factors such as altitude, topography, and winds (velocity and direction) on the distribution of precipitation (mm/h) in events of extreme rainfall volumes.
