Abstract in English
Brazil has become the world's largest sugarcane producer with 642.7 million tons per year and 8.442 million hectares of the planted area by 2021. As a consequence, the use of agrochemicals in farming has been expanded, implying harmful effects on the structure and functioning of ecosystems. Several studies have been and are being developed to prove the deleterious effects on non-target organisms in aquatic and terrestrial compartments, as well as to create efficient and sustainable techniques to reduce the toxicity of soil contaminated with pesticides. Therefore, biochar, a carbonaceous material produced by pyrolysis at high temperatures, is derived from various matrices and presents itself as a potential alternative substrate for reducing soil toxicity. The present research aimed to evaluate the potential use of biochar, produced from sugarcane straw, in the reduction of toxicity of soils contaminated with the pesticides Regent® 800 WG (a.i. fipronil), DMA® 806 BR (a.i. 2,4-D) in isolation and in mixture. Tests were conducted in microcosms for 28 days, soil and elutriate, evaluating different biological responses of aquatic and terrestrial organisms. In the microcosms, were evaluated the survival, reproduction, and feeding of the Enchytraeus crypticus species and the germination, growth, and fresh and dry biomass of the species Eruca sativa L. (arugula). With the soil and elutriate generated from the microcosm, were observed the germination rate and growth of the aerial part and root of the species E. sativa and the survival and feeding rate of the cladoceran Daphnia similis. The results showed that concentrations of 1,31 mg/kg of the herbicide 2,4-D and 0.09 mg/kg of the insecticide fipronil, alone and in a mixture, significantly decreased the reproduction of the species E. crypticus in microcosms, with emphasis on the toxicity of fipronil and mixture, which was reduced by 25%. The sugarcane straw biochar was effective in decreasing toxicity when evaluating the reproduction of E. crypticus in the fipronil treatment (43% increase in the reproduction of neonates), however, the control with biochar showed reproduction decrease of 23% when compared with the control. Biochar proved to be an excellent alternative in reducing the toxicity of pesticides to E. sativa, because of the 2x greater growth of the aerial part in the treatments with 2,4-D in the presence of biochar, as well as 2.8x greater germination rate when compared to the 2,4-D treatment without biochar. The results of the tests performed with soil and elutriate also showed the potential of biochar to decrease the toxicity of pesticides, especially 2,4-D (more toxic to the plant species). The soil tests show that 2,4-D reduced the emergence of the species by 31% when compared to the control. However, in the 2,4-D contamination scenarios, there was a 50% increase when comparing the presence and absence of biochar. The elutriate tests showed that in the 2,4-D treatment, biochar increased aboveground growth and germination by 45% and 34%, respectively. When analysing the mortality and feeding rate of D. similis exposed to the elutriate samples, neither the effects of contaminants nor significant differences between the treatments with and without biochar were identified. In general, the results indicated great potential for the use of biochar to reduce the toxicity of the pesticides 2,4-D and fipronil for the species studied. However, further studies with more species and in more representative models (e.g., mesocosms or field applications) are suggested.
