Abstract in English
In this work, it was investigated the co-digestion, in pairs, of agro-industrial wastewater generated by dairy (cheese whey), biodiesel (glycerin) and ethanol (sugarcane vinasse) industry in a thermophilic anaerobic reactor with biomass immobilized on inert support, mechanically stirred and operated in sequential batch and fed-batch (AnSBBR) for environmental compliance and methane production. Different combinations between substrates were implemented (cheese whey-sugarcane vinasse; glycerin-cheese whey; and, glycerin-sugarcane vinasse). Assays were performed in steps: (i) wastewater composition; (ii) increase of organic load (AVOL) through the affluent concentration; (iii) changing the feeding strategy; and (iv) modification of the operating temperature. The system was evaluated according to operational stability and performance indicators related to methane productivity (MPr) and the yield of methane generation relative to the amount of removed organic matter (YCOD-REM). In experimental terms, the results indicated the feasibility of producing methane using the studied substrate combination. Best results were obtained at operation in fed-batch and at temperature of 55 °C. In co-digestion of cheese whey and sugarcane vinasse, assay conducted with 25 % cheese whey and 75 % sugarcane vinasse and AVOL 24,4 kgCOD. m-3.d-1 reached 79 % of COD consumption, MPr of 272 molCH4.m-3.d-1 and YCOD-REM of 14,1 mmolCH4.gCOD-1. Regarding co-digestion of glycerin and cheese whey, COD removal of 64 %, MPr of 244 molCH4.m-3.d-1 and YCOD-REM of 15,6 mmolCH4.gCOD-1 were obtained in assay with 75 % glycerin and 25 % cheese whey and AVOL 19,1 kgCOD.m-3.d-1. It was predict that the application of thermophilic AnSBBR in a medium-size dairy, the energy recovery would be 94 MWh.month-1 and 120 MWh.month-1, respectively. In the case of co-digestion of glycerin and sugarcane vinasse, the increase in AVOL to 11 kgDQO. m-3.d-1 was possible by reducing the proportion of glycerin from 25 % to 12,5 % and increasing the proportion of 87,5 % of sugarcane vinasse. The COD removal was 72 %, the MPr was 73 molCH4. m-3.d-1 and YCOD-REM of 9,1 mmolCH4.gDQO-1, which estimated energy recovery was 4,100 MWh.month-1. In all conditions studied, the kinetic model was adjusted to the experimental data.
