The advance in civil engineering can be noticed through the significant generation of construction and demolition waste. One approach to providing a better destination for these materials is through their incorporation into the production of concrete. The evolution of the civil construction sector also involves the optimization of construction processes and the consequent adoption of different structural elements, such as the use of steel-concrete composite beams, which has gained popularity in recent decades. One of its typologies is the partially encased composite beam, which guarantees an increase in rigidity compared to the isolated steel section, in addition to improvements in seismic and fire behavior. However, one of the great challenges inherent to composite structures is the establishment of efficient interaction between steel and concrete. This challenge is more evident concerning concrete produced with recycled aggregates, where strands of the literature present controversial conclusions regarding the influence of this concrete on the structure's composite behavior. In addition, due to the origin of recycled aggregates, studies have presented conflicting conclusions regarding the reduction of concrete's mechanical properties, in comparison to those produced with natural aggregate. By associating recycled concrete with the steel profile by its partial encasement, better performance of both materials is granted. Thus, this work aimed to investigate, through experimental and numerical analysis, the behavior of composite beams partially encased with recycled aggregate concrete, with shear connectors (stud bolts) horizontally welded on the faces of the web of the steel beam. The study encompassed an experimental program composed of two main stages. The first one contemplated a preliminary analysis to characterize the main properties of concretes with four replacement ratios (0%, 30%, 50%, and 100%) of natural aggregates by recycled coarse aggregates, focused on choosing the replacement ratio to be applied in the partially encased composite beam. Consequently, the second stage was a four-point bending test, to analyze the structural behavior and capacity of the studied element. Numerical analysis was also performed using the finite element computational package, ABAQUS. The results showed that, compared to conventional concrete, the one produced with recycled aggregates presented slightly lower mechanical properties, but little influence on the structural capacity and on the establishment of an efficient composite behavior of the beam. In order to expand the analyses, a parametric study was developed. The influence of geometric properties of the steel profile, the type of concrete, and the yield strength of the steel were evaluated in terms of the structural capacity of the composite beam. Among those parameters, the height of the steel profile and the thickness of its flange were the most significant in the matter of ultimate capacity. Therefore, this study has an exploratory nature about partially encased composite beams with recycled concrete, presenting satisfactory results regarding the flexural behavior of the structural element.
