Pandemia COVID-19

Abstract in English
Introduction: Due to the urgency of COVID-19, many health agencies have released recommendations for the care of various types of diseases during the pandemic, including oncology. In the healthcare field, one of the measures to prevent contagion of the new coronavirus was to change the flow of elective medical consultations to avoid crowding. Objective: The objective of this study was to present the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the care of oncology patients in a tertiary public hospital and COVID-19 Reference Center. Methods: This was an ecological study of temporal series that evaluated the main indicators of oncology treatment in patients aged 18 years or older and diagnosed with ICD-10 Chapter C. Two intervals were considered for the analyses: a period called "Pre-pandemic" and a second period called "Pandemic". The data were extracted from the electronic database of the hospital's systems. Results: In the "Pandemic" period there was a reduction of 833 (-20,4%) medical consultation vacancies, 1.168 (-37,6%) appointments scheduled for patients, 968 (-19,0%) new case consultations, 9.908 (-29,1%) follow-up consultations, 349 (-15,6%) oncological surgeries in the operating room and 214 (-17,1%) ambulatory surgeries, 1.901 (-8,3%) chemotherapy treatments, and 10 (-1,0%) new patients who started chemotherapy treatments. There were also 934 (-17,3%) hospitalizations and an increase of 27 (3,4%) new patients who started radiation therapy, compared to the "Pre-pandemic" period. Conclusion: This study provided a comprehensive overview of oncology care during the first wave of the pandemic COVID-19, in which changes in aspects of care and oncological treatment were observed.
