Keywords in Portuguese
Dinamômetro de força muscular
Osteoporose
Pico de torque
Unidade músculo-osso
Title in English
The association between muscle strength of the hip and knee and the bone mineral density of the femoral neck in elderly women
Keywords in English
Dynamometer of muscular strength
Muscle-bone unity
Osteoporosis
Peak torque
Abstract in English
As osteoporosis is a disease prevalent among the elderly and which can lead to incapacity and loss of function, it is important to better understand muscle-bone interaction in order to direct healthcare professionals in relation to new strategies to stimulate the increase of bone mass and thus reduce the risk of bone fractures. Objective: To verify the association between muscular strength in hip and knee muscles and the bone mineral density (BMD) of the femoral neck in elderly women. Method: This is a transversal study of 94 women over the age of 60, with amenorrhea > 12 months, capable of siting-rising and walking without help. Muscular strength of hips and knees was evaluated using an isokinetic dynamometer (Biodex) to obtain the peak torque (PT) variable of the flexor and extensor muscles of the hip and knee and of the adductors of the hip. The BMD of the femoral neck was obtained by means of dual-energy x-ray absorption densitometry (DXA). Statistical analysis: All of the analyses were carried out by the SPSS (version 17.0) software, with a level of p<0.05 significance. The sample was characterized as representing the mean, standard deviation and frequency. To verify the association between muscular strength of the hip and knee (an independent variable) and the BMD of the femoral neck (a dependent variable) the Pearson correlation test was carried out followed by multivariable linear regression adjusted for age, time of menopause, Body Mass Index (BMI) and level of physical activity. Results: The results show a positive association between the PT of the hip abductors normalized by the body mass and the BMD of the femoral neck (r=0.18; p=0.03; β=1.12; p=0.004; R2=0.24). Conclusion: Our study made it possible to observe a positive correlation between muscular strength of the abductors in the hip and the BMD of the femoral neck in elderly women reinforcing the mechanical model between skeletal-muscular systems.
