Abstract in English
The prohibitive prices of hearing aids limit the population's access to this benefit. And those who need to acquire the devices for free are faced with lengthy queues. The objective of this work was to evaluate the satisfaction, benefit and performance with a low cost digitally programmable analog hearing aid and compare it to a digital hearing aid. Participants were 55 subjects who were candidates for the use of hearing aids, with a mean age of 65.9 years. The study was double-blind, randomized and crossover. All participants tested the use of two hearing aid technologies, one digitally programmable analogue and the other digital, for a period of 10 weeks each. To analyze satisfaction with the devices, the Satisfaction with Amplification in Daily Life (SADL) questionnaire was used, the International Outcome Inventory for Hearing Aids (IOI-HA) benefit was used, and the Portuguese Sentence List (PSL) test was used for performance. There were no statistically significant differences when comparing the satisfaction and benefit of the two hearing aid technologies. There was satisfaction with daily use on the SADL negative effects scale for both hearing devices. The two hearing devices brought benefits to the user, identified by the IOI-HA. There was no difference between the two technologies in the Sentence Recognition Percentage Index in Silence and Fixed Noise. There was a statistically significant worsening in the Sentence Recognition Percentage Index in the Noise variable without hearing aids between pre and post use. It is concluded that there were no statistically significant differences in the comparison between the use of the new digitally programmable analog technology hearing aid and the digital technology.
