Fatores associados à polimedicação no transtorno do espectro autista

Tratamento medicamentoso

Abstract in English
Autism Spectrum Disorder is associated with deficits in interaction and social communication and restricted and stereotyped behaviors and interests. In addition to these central symptoms, disruptive behaviors and comorbid diagnoses can occur. Polymedication is the medical behavior of prescribing more than one medication for a patient. In this study, it was defined as the use of two or more medications. Due to clinical heterogeneity, patients with a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Disorder are often polymedicated. The aim of this study was to verify and evaluate the occurrence of psychiatric polymedication in patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Then, 62 children and adolescents aged 3 to 17 years, who were undergoing outpatient treatment at the Hospital das Clínicas in Ribeirão Preto, were evaluated. Parents were interviewed and children were evaluated using the ABC, CARS, CGI-S instruments. Caregivers' quality of life was also assessed using the WHOQOL- bref scale. The frequency of polymedication in the sample was 33.86%. The most prescribed medication class was antipsychotics, with a predominance of risperidone. Patient factors associated with polymedication were the presence of externalizing symptoms, age, comorbidity with ADHD, tics and epilepsy and severity of ASD. Environmental factors, including caregiver's quality of life and availability of multidisciplinary therapies, were not associated with polymedication.
