Keywords in Portuguese
Álcool
Drogas psicotrópicas
Medicamentos sem receita médica
Tabagismo

Abstract in English
The objective of this study was to estimate the prevalence and identify the factors associated with the use of psychotropic drugs among individuals of different age groups in the years 2016 to 2017. This is a subproject developed within the study "Determinants throughout the life cycle of obesity, precursors of chronic diseases, human capital and mental health. A contribution of Brazilian birth cohorts to SUS". Participants of the fifth phase of the 1978/1979 cohort of Ribeirão Preto (n=1672) and participants of the third phase of the 1994 cohort of Ribeirão Preto (n=1022), aged 37-39 and 22-24 years, respectively, were included. Data collection and typing was performed by means of a general questionnaire and a self-applied confidential questionnaire using the Research Electronic Data Capture (RedCap) application. The description of the variables of interest of the study and the comparison of the use of psychotropic substances in the two samples was performed from the determination of measures of central tendency (proportion) and dispersion (confidence interval of 95% of the proportion) and a bivariate analysis (Pearson's chi-square test) with a significance level of 5% was performed. The identification of variables associated with the outcome (yes or no use of psychotropic drugs) was determined from the logistic regression method. The statistical package Stata, version 14.0 was used. The highest prevalence of lifetime use was found in alcohol (79.4% of the oldest and 84.2% of the youngest) and tobacco (35.4% of the oldest and 36.2% of the youngest) in the two age groups analysed. The risk factors for the non-prescribed use in life of psychotropic drugs were: not having a partner (a) and being the young person himself the head of the family (alcohol), not having a partner (a) and having problems related to alcohol (tobacco), having problems related to alcohol (other drugs), among the youngest; having high school and not having religion (alcohol), having problems related to alcohol (tobacco) and not having religion and having problems related to alcohol (other drugs), among the youngest. The protective factors were: being female (alcohol and other drugs), among the older ones; not being working and belonging to the socio-economical class C (alcohol), being female (tobacco) and being female, having a high school/technical/professional/ higher education, being brown/mulatto (other drugs) among the younger ones. The findings prove the hypothesis that there are differences in the use of psychotropic substances in life and in the associated factors, according to age group and type of substance, and for most of them the predictions of use in life were greater among the youngest, being able to provide subsubsidies for future research and preparation of public policies on the subject.
