Abstract in English
The estimation of age involving criminal matters is a topic of great importance, especially with regard to criminal majority. For this reason, it is believed that the use of third molars to estimate age has great pertinence. As there are several methodologies for age estimation, this study aimed to analyze seven atlas-based methodologies (Schour and Massler; Moorrees, Fanning and Hunt; London Atlas; Nicodemo, Moraes and Médici; Nolla; Köhler; Gunst) and verify if they are effective or not for the estimation of criminal majority age in a Brazilian population. Five-hundred panoramic radiographs of both genders, aged between 15 and 24 years, from the collections of the Faculty of Dentistry of Ribeirão Preto (FORP) and the Faculty of Dentistry of Bauru (FOB), both at the University of São Paulo (USP). The radiographs were analyzed according to the atlas developed in each of the methodologies using only the third molars. It is concluded that the methods were well calibrated and are reproducible, with intra- and inter-examiner values above, on average, 0.84. Statistically, Gunst, and Schour and Massler better estimated age on average. Analyzing each age separately, Köhler and London Atlas had a better performance in the estimates. By the age of 15, all of the samples had at least the complete crown, and by the age of 18 at least the beginning of root formation. With complete dental maturation, the percentage of individuals who were 18 years old or more was greater than 95%, with the exception of Schour and Massler, who had a percentage above 87%. The AUC values were higher than 0.716, reaching 0.850.
